I wish I had this version of Justin Hines & The Dominoes "Save A Bread" on a 45, but all I have it on is this comp, The Rock Steady Years 66-68. Everything on this compilation is great, but "Save A Bread" is my favorite. I have the later version that was released on his LP "Jezebel" as "What You Don't Know", but this early version is killer.

Michael Prophet's Love & Unity is one of my favorite songs ever. It was Mixed by Scientist and The Roots Radics is the backing band. It is the original vocal track to "Your Teeth In My Neck" on Scientist's dub LP, Scientist Rids The World of The Evil Curse of The Vampires which was the album used for the K-JAH Radio on Grand Theft Auto 3.

1968 soul on the Zudan label out of St. Louis. The band members are from STL but the song was recorded in Detroit with the backing band consisting of members of Parliament / Funkadelic. The lead singer currently lives in East St. Louis. The song was also sampled for Black Milk's "Try".

LIFERS GROUP - REAL DEAL (SHADOW REMIX)

Lifers Group was a group composed of convicts serving sentences at Rahway Prison in New Jersey put together by Maxwell Melvins (inmate 660604). It was a project that gathered together the incarcerated "lifers" to discourage those who still had their freedom from living the gangsta rap lifestyle. The nightmare vision of prison life was revealed in gory detail on tracks like "Real Deal" & the set was recorded 3 months after the Disney-funded Hollywood Basic Records had heard of the scheme.
